Website Basics - What Search Engines and Surfers Want

Website Basics - Tips For Building a Professional Website

Before you start building your website it’s important to get a feeling of what your visitors and search engines will look for. These website basics will help you build a website to attract potential customers and search engines.

Potential Customers

When people use the internet they are mainly looking for one thing.  That thing is information.  People want to find what they are looking for without being distracted by fancy graphics, music or flashing images.

They also don’t want to be confronted with sales page after sales page selling them everything under the sun.

Think about it, if you type in puppy care and find tons of websites selling books about puppies you’re going to be disappointed.  You want information on how to care for your puppy now and you don’t want to pay for it.

Now if you find a website that gives you puppy care instructions and help for free, then that same website makes recommendations for a book or tool about puppy training then you’ll be more likely to trust their recommendation more than the other site just trying to sell you a product.

There are millions of site on the net, people don’t know you or your business.  You need to build a sense of trust and relationship.  And the only way to do this is by providing valuable information.

Search Engines

Search engines also want one thing, and that is to provide their customers (surfers using their search engines) with the most highly accurate results possible.  This will make them stand out from their competitors.  Remember they are in business just like you.

Always, keep this in mind.  Provide highly targeted and valuable content and the search engines will reward you with higher rankings.  Your valuable content will help the search engines provide highly targeted results to their customers.  In turn, you’ll attract more customers to your site.  And your customers will be happy they found what they were looking for.  It’s a win/win situation for all involved.  And this is the position you want to be in.

Search Engine and Human Friendly Design

Make it easy for people to read your valuable words by using standard Ariel or Verdana font in black.

Don’t use a color or picture background.  Always use white.

Make it easy for everyone to find what they’re looking for by including a site map and easy to follow links.

Place a form on your website to make it easy for customers to contact you.  Always reply in a prompt and friendly manner.

Have a survey where people can leave comments about your services or website.

Always think of ways to make it easier for your customers.  And for those all important search engines, don’t forget to optimize each of your pages to make it easy for their robots to find you.

That’s the key to being successful online and building lasting relationships with your customers and search engines.

Give your customers what they want (both human and search engines).  Think about their needs first and foremost.  And try to fulfil them in any way you can.  Those are the building blocks of successful businesses.

“Always fulfil the needs of your customers first and success will follow”
